That fact that anyone working with food in America doesn’t have guaranteed paid sick days is a health hazard to the public.
no but for real, the CDC has said the leading cause of foodborne illness is the lack of sick days for people who work in the food industry and that it costs billions a year to the economy.
My mom has been preaching about being pro-Hillary for like 90 years. SO TODAY I made her takethis quiz which asks you a bunch of questions about your personal/political beliefs and matches you with the candidate that sides with your issues most. So she takes the quiz and her highest match was 98% Bernie Sanders. Hillary? 83%, Which isn’t terrible, but fuck! There’s a candidate that you agree almost 100% with and you’re not gonna vote for him? Now she’s questioning her vote. That’s a good thing. Please take this quiz you guys. It’s called isidewith.com and it is so helpful ESPECIALLY*** for young voters who don’t know a lot about issues. WE NEED YOUR VOTES MY YOUNG FRIENDS. This guy could seriously change our country for the better. Even if you don’t vote for Bernie, take the quiz anyway because it will help you figure out the candidate for you. It’s not that long and it’s REALLY IMPORTANT!
I really hate this post bc i really disagree with it and I think it makes a bigger impact that a Hufflepuff was the Hogwarts Champion than if a Slytherin was bc Hufflepuff is the house that is treated the worst in canon (and in fanon too). Malfoy says he would rather leave Hogwarts than be in Hufflepuff and Hagrid says that Hufflepuff is full of duffers (or something like that). So I really think it was a big deal that Cedric (a Hufflepuff) was the Hogwarts Champion bc really Hufflepuffs deserve way more recognize than they get by everyone.
Yes! The whole point was that in-universe, Hufflepuff got so little recognition or respect that even a House defined by its adherence to fairness seemed to feel is was kosher to mock Harry because they believed he was hogging the spotlight. In terms of the narrative, Slytherin might have gotten the short straw, but in-universe, Hufflepuff was the house of the despised, the disrespected, the ‘also-rans’. Cedric being the champion had been the ray of hope for them.
Straight person: I like this cause its so realistic. Gay people don’t just talk about how gay they are all the time. Their sexuality is never brought up just like in real life because whats important is they are people not the gender they love
Actual queer person: I’m so gay guys. Like really really gay do you realise how gay I am? Sometimes I lie awake at night thinking about how fucking gay I am my gay potential is through the roof god save my queer soul
minerva mcgonagall deciding not to go into retirement after seeing james sirius isn’t quite as bad as either of his namesakes or his father and is silently relieved because sure, he does some pranks but he also really loves transfiguration and adores learning and tends not to disrupt class. and she figures albus and lily luna can’t possible be worse. and she’s right about albus for the most part, the kid is quiet, if with a tendency to wander the castle after hours
but lily luna
oh god
minerva thought she was safe. but lily luna potter is the biggest menace she has ever seen in the smallest body. lily aces her classes and still manages to have at least three running pranks per school day. lily, backed by her pseudo maurauders molly and lucy weasley as well as the combined genius of the scamander twins. lily who wins the maurauders map from her brother within the first week of first year using a very cleverly planned game of exploding snap and some innovative taunting to get james to bet the map in the first place.
lily luna who is somehow her grandfather and her mother and her uncles fred and george all combined into one, with the evil genius and ambition worthy of a slytherin
minerva survives a few months before she decides to call it a day and leave asap. the scamander twins are amazed that lily calculated that retirement almost to the day
a friend of mine told me about her friend i think from high school who was gay but not out, and he pretended for a while to have a girlfriend named Amanda who he would go see a lot, and they’d be all, come hang out with us and he’d be like sorry I’ve got a date with Amanda, and they were like when are we gonna meet this Amanda??? anyway he kept this up for like a year until he finally came out; and when his friends were like, “wait, what about Amanda?” he said, “IT’S A MAN, DUH.”
i have literally never admired anyone’s commitment to a joke more
- She was outed by her mom
- She has dated men and women which I would assume makes her bisexual
- Do not go around saying she is a lesbian
- Do not spread rumors
- Be kind
Feel free to add onto this.
- A married man once cheated on his wife with her, and she, Kristen, had to apologize publicly. The man, whom had cheated on his wife, didn’t have to.
- That she doesn’t show many emotions in Twilight doesn’t make her a bad actor. Actually, it makes her a rather good actor, since that’s exactly how Bella is described in the books.
- She has every right to be rude against paparazzis, since they fucking stalk her and have made her cry publicly more than once. The same goes for every other celebrity ever.
Life is about learning, right? Upon coming to Ireland, a couple things were clarified for me by my Irish friends. For instance, no one speaks ‘Gaelic’ in Ireland.
Before people start fainting, let me explain. Gaelic is a linguistic term that covers three different Celtic languages: Irish, Scottish Gaelic, and Manx. It’s what’s called in the biz, ‘Q-Celtic’, because when certain words in the Gaelic languages were making ‘Q’ or ‘K’ sounds, their sister-words in ‘P-Celtic’ languages were making ‘P’ or ‘B’ sounds. Welsh, Breton, and Manx make up the P-Celtic, Brythonic languages.
Here’s an example:
In Irish, the word for ‘son’ or ‘boy’ is mac.
In Welsh, that word is mab.
See what happened there? This is why asking an Irish person if they speak ‘Gaelic’ will only get you a confused reply. The Irish speak Irish. Basta cosí.
The second thing my friends made clear was that Irish myth is Irish, Welsh myth is Welsh, Cornish myth is Cornish. ‘Celtic’ is another word that won’t get you very far.
Like Gaelic, ‘Celtic’ is a linguistic umbrella term. It makes about as much sense to talk about a book of ‘Celtic myths’ as it does to talk about the ‘Romantic cookbook’ you used for that lasagne recipe (Italian is a Romance language). Often, when people talk about ‘Celtic’ myth, what they really mean are the myths of one of the six languages mentioned above.
TL;DR. Celtic ≠ Irish
≠ Gaelic, etc.
Why does this matter?
It matters because these are different cultures we’re talking about, different histories and social identities. In calling the character Rhiannon a Celtic goddess, she loses definition. She becomes vague. In calling her a Welsh character, she has a context, a history. Cú Chulainn is not a Celtic hero, but an Irish one, with all the literary and historical implications that brings. It doesn’t help that we don’t have, archaeologically or linguistically, any evidence to say that all the cultures that spoke Celtic languages shared a similar cultural identity.
Liz Bourke and Charles Stross have recently blogged on similar lines, and I admit I was inspired to say something, myself, after reading them. (Check them out!)
Is this all a bit pedantic? Maybe. To be honest, it’s worth being a little persnickety if it means adding definition and clarity and understanding to our world. Understanding, in my mind, is always a good thing.
I am absolutely livid right now because the House voted to defund Planned Parenthood for one year (a loss of 1/3 of their funding) unless they stop performing abortions. That means the $300 million dollars of federal funding Planned Parenthood gets from Medicaid and family planning dollars is now gone. The result of this is going to be less access for low income people to get the healthcare provided by Planned Parenthood. There’s still a chance that this bill will not pass in Senate and if it does will likely be veto’d by Obama. Let’s hope it doesn’t make it any further than it has now.
-Myra
Obama has promised to veto the bill once it reaches his desk, but this is still ridiculous.
And we need to show with our support and votes that we are not ok with attacks on reproductive health care. State officials and other countries are watching. If they see that voters do not support this they are much more likely to change their minds
Do you mean doctors who spent years learning about abled white cis men’s bodies
do you know anything about the world besides what you read on tumblr
Okay but this is true?? Shut up with your bullshit, the medical industry for a very very long time has used the able bodied white cis male as their standard and that has very real healthcare consequences for a lot of people.
Do you know why most women don’t know when they’re having heart attacks? Why heart attacks kill more women than men? Because symptoms of a heart attack are different for women and the ones that doctors usually recognize and publicize are the symptoms experienced by men. Do you know why it’s so difficult for Black and Brown people to get diagnosed if they have skin cancer? Because doctors have been taught to recognize it on white people. People of size are constantly told that their problems are entirely because of their weight and doctors don’t even bother to look beyond that to be sure that’s the case. So those people have medical conditions go undiagnosed properly for years, and die in the process. Fuck, even just the fact that people think it’s okay to charge women more for healthcare because “they have extra parts” (?????) is indicative of the way the male body has been considered the standard for fucking ever. And the healthcare needs of disabled people or trans people? Forget about it.
OP is 1000% right. The medical industry has used the able cis white male body as their standard of care for CENTURIES and that has real consequences for the rest of us today. It’s getting better but it’s not where it should be. So fuck off with your snarky commentary, you’re wrong. The healthcare industry is not equipped to handle the needs of people with disabilities, women, PoC, trans people, people of size, etc. and that’s in large part due to the fact that the established body of medical knowledge was created by studying able, cis, white male bodies almost exclusively.
Hey there folks, speaking as a trained EMT and a pre-med student, I can confirm that the above person is approximately 7000% accurate. In my EMT training, I would repeatedly ask ‘’but what if my patent is a woman” or “what is my patient is a person of color” and at first all I got was shock. Then I got confused bumbling. I got some answers–basic symptoms of a heart attack in women, how to recognize cyanosis in someone of color, the basics of how to work with an autistic patient or someone who for whatever reason can’t communicate well with you. In fact, EMTs and other EMS workers are getting a lot better at learning the differences between the health care for a person of color or someone disabled. We were even told that we would need to ask our patients for their biological sex (I know, I’m really sorry, I know that there are people who find this intensely uncomfortable or even harmful, but there are real medical reasons for this and most decent EMTs will use whatever pronouns you ask them to). But most if not all of the answers we were given about women were directly related to gynecological issues. The guys teaching me? They were good guys. Nice. Funny. Smart. Devoted to caring for patients. Impassioned about protecting people, especially women and teenaged girls, from assault. Largely not sexist toward me or their coworkers. Hell, they were even smart enough to say “listen, boys, the women in this class have a higher pain tolerance than you, they just do, and as a rule if a women says their pain is a 5 on a scale of 1-10, assume it’s somewhere around an 8” when a kid laughed during the gyno unit. But they just didn’t know what to say when I asked “so if you’re supposed to palpate the patient’s chest, what do you do if your patient’s a triple-D” or when I asked “so if your patient gets menstrual migraines, how do you know if this headache is a stroke or not.” They had never been taught. This is a real problem, one that many medical professionals work hard to remedy once they start practicing. But this is not bullshit. At all. The standard patient is a cis white guy with no disabilities or chronic illnesses. It’s a huge fucking problem and I’m going to need you to step down with your bullshit, there, friend.
Thank you words-writ-in-starlight ! It’s a huge problem that a few of the leading med schools are starting to recognize . Let me add that medications and dosing standards in Big Pharma also use the cis male model in research/development. Women’s bodies and hormones affect medication efficacy greatly, yet that is t always taken in consideration when meds are prescribed.
So I'm kind of low-key constantly on the look out for a new decent book to read (gay is a 10000% bonus) and you seem pretty enthusiastic about the Captive Prince (and all I know about it is that there's a gay couple)...d'you have a pitch for it? (Coherency not required)
D O I E V E R
okay, so you know how you read a book and you’re like ‘this is great, but imagine if x’ or ‘this would be ten times more intense if they x’ or even ‘I can’t wait to hit up Ao3 later because if anything is gonna have an AU where one of them is an exiled prince sold to the other as a slave it’s this’? THE ANSWER TO ALL OF THESE QUESTIONS IS CAPTIVE PRINCE. THEY’RE NOT EVEN QUESTIONS, BUT CAPTIVE PRINCE IS THE ANSWER.
it’s all the things you look for in a fic: an intense slowburn between The Hero and The Ruler with the most toe-curling concept packed full of A+ romance tropes, literally breathtaking teases and epic twists and it’s written by that one fic writer who nails characterisation even when she’s writing an off-the-wall royalty AU and manages to turn what the plot summary said would be a ‘master/slave erotica’ into an intelligent, gripping, intensely romantic and not at all problematic thrill ride about secret identities, politics and courtly intrigue – EXCEPT IT’S NOT A FIC! IT’S A BOOK! YOU CAN BUY IT AND HOLD IN YOUR ACTUAL HUMAN HANDS!!!
but honestly. princes! sword fights! incredible world-building! power dynamics! secrets and lies! a not insubstantial amount of background exhibitionism! incredible build-up of the main relationship, the eventual consummation of which literally brought me to overwhelmed tears! read! captive! prince!
(other things of note: 1. not a gay couple! one is bisexual and the other, for my money, is grey-asexual. which just makes it even BETTER. LIKE IT WASN’T ALREADY THE MOST APPEALING THING ON THIS GOOD EARTH. 2. it neatly sidesteps all the 50 Shades-esque pitfalls you’re imagining it falling into. trust.*)
If you vote to defund planned parenthood, then you do not care about women or children. Did you ever stop to think about the services that they provide for pregnant women who do want to keep the child? Think about how expensive proper health care is for women, especially pregnant women. You don’t want them to get an abortion, but yet you’re allowing funds to be cut for them to provide care so that their child can be born healthy. You’re also stopping women from getting birth control. So you are basically taking away any choice women have about their bodies, and that will never be justifiable.
Sean Bean dies in everything because it’s the universe trying to correct the hole ripped in it due to the fact that his name doesn’t rhyme when it should
did anyone ever actually read animorphs or did we all just glance at the covers and assume it needed no explanation on the way to the goosebumps section in our elementary school library
animorphs is a scifi series about the grey morality of war and child soldiers experiencing trauma, depression, PTSD, being frequently and brutally dismembered, disemboweled, literally tortured to the brink of death, forced to murder their own family members with their bare hands, and on page 22 of the very first book they watch the alien prince who gave them their ~wacky animal morphing powers~ scream while be eaten alive in vivid and gory detail
One dude permanently turned into a bird for a while, forgot how to make facial expressions when he was a human and ate roadkill. And that was one of the tamer things.
You know the starfish cover everyone likes to mock especially? The girl beat someone to death with her own severed arm in that one :)
If Bernie loses the primaries: YOU STILL MUST VOTE
Tumblr’s become so attached to Bernie that I’m not sure y’all are still gonna vote in the election if he loses. I will vote for him, I know most of you might too, but we must still be prepared for something like that :/
I know it would mean that you will have lost the one candidate you believed in the most. I know it will possibly mean voting for Hillary over the Republicans, when all of you don’t like her that much, I understand, believe me.
BUT HERE’S WHY YOU STILL VOTE:
1. Because are you going to give the Republicans a greater chance of victory?
I know it seems like HRC and the Republicans are one in the same to most of you, but if both HRC and the GOP REALLY dislike each other? You can tell that’s not exactly true. Granted when compared to Bernie, Hillary seems conservative, but Bernie’s super liberal where Clinton reflects most of the party, center-left, like Obama. She’s not the progressive you all want, but she sure as hell ain’t conservative. Bernie has positive things to say about Hillary, and, let’s face it, she is still a better choice than any GOP candidate.
2. Not voting means you are still deciding who has a better chance of winning in the election, don’t be fooled.
Don’t think that Bernie not winning the Dem nomination means that there is no hope at all for change and that voting for any Democrat is useless, if you don’t vote, you give the Republicans a greater chance of winning, just like I said above. And you know what? Good. Because that’s exactly what they want. Why would they want young people voting if it means they might vote Democrat? Think about that hard.
Seriously,he released a whole video on how “elites want big money to dominate the political process” and this:
And he KNOWS they don’t want that. You will not be making a positive change if you don’t vote, hence he is saying you will make the problem worse, if you avoid voting.
This is not only for this election. It is 2016 and beyond. Don’t forget that, please.

Guys, I cannot stress how amazing this program is.
You can use it to highlight, write notes, mark up, etc. What I do is I highlight all the important jazz, use the comments to write notes on the document, and on the side bar, I write an annotated bib for it for future me. It save everything you write on it forever for you and you can put the articles in folders and organize it.
But that’s not the best part, the best part is that you can access your articles ANYWHERE. Literally anywhere. Forgot your laptop and at a public library? No worries! You can go to the Mendeley website and ACCESS ALL YOUR ARTICLES WITH YOUR NOTES ONLINE. You don’t even have to download the program to access it! It is a life saver and I suggest everyone in academia use it!
I feel like if the harry potter theme parks sold jumpers that looked like weasley jumpers but they had every single letter in the alphabet they’d make a lot of money
unpaid internships are oppressive and should be illegal i’m not being cute or funny they are 100% designed to reward people with greater access to resources and i’m fundamentally opposed to hiring for unpaid labor every internship should be required to provide at least a nominal stipend
“The best time to make ideas is through sleep deprivation!”
“I want to do so much more right before bed and I don’t understand why!”
etc.
So basically when you stay up way too late it effects your problem solving ability and your ability to make decisions. [1]
Do you want to know a possible reason as to why that “I stayed up really late and now I feel so creative and willing to draw!” feeling happens? Because your self-critique center is shutting down because you’ve been awake for too long.
You are always as creative and able to do things as you were when you were awake. That potential doesn’t just disappear.
Difference is– when you’re wide awake you have a stronger problem-solving and decision-making center, which is obviously related to self-critique. Being tired doesn’t necessarily make you more creative and motivated, being tired forces you to quiet that part of yourself that holds you back.
