Leslie Morton, 18, was an able-bodied seaman working aboard Lusitania with his brother, John. Leslie was also the first man to spot the torpedo(es) coming toward the Lusitania. Leslie helped lower load and lifeboats. The brothers were separated when they jumped into the water. Leslie, along with another crewman.
When they finally landed, Leslie did not know what had become of his brother. He sent a telegram to his father, stating: AM SAVED. LOOKING FOR JOHN.
John, who was also saved, sent a similar telegram to his father: LOOKING FOR LES.
Leslie prepared himself for the unhappy task of looking for his brother in the impromptu morgues of the city. He saw the bodies of men, women, and children laid out in various states of sorrow and distress. As he lifted up a sheet off a corpse, a hand on the other side also lifted the sheet, and Leslie looked up and saw John at him. The brothers celebrated their reunion with their first Guinness. [x]
