If you try for one second to tell me the X-Men isn’t an allegory for the gay rights movement, I will smack you. They weren’t even remotely subtle about this.
The mutants have always been an allegory for anyone that didn’t fit in to society. The folks who drew the comics made a point of that early on.
It’s not just the gay rights movement, its not just kids trying to “come out” to their parents. Its people being mistreated by the government, put away, forced to pretend to be “normal”, systematically oppressed, even killed for who they are because the powers that be cant control it. It’s an allegory for blacks, gays, the disabled (mentally and physically), women, and anyone really who isnt a white man at the top of the food chain.
Fun fact: Ian McKellen worked with the screenwriters to make this scene directly parallel with kids coming out as queer to their parents. This scene was 100% meant to be an allegory for coming out.

when i was in the hospital i had a nurse who stayed overtime after working the night shift and waited till i woke up so we could eat together. all my nurses in intensive care came to visit me when i got moved to pediatrics because they got word that i cried when i had to leave them. the nurse in the ambulance came to visit me because apparently on the way to the hospital i expressed to her that i thought no one loved me enough to visit me in the hospital. my love for nurses is out of this fucking world.
Nurses are some of the best people on Earth. When I was admitted the second time (the sepsis time) and they wheeled me back into pediatrics, literally all of the nurses were in hysterics because they were so sad to see that I was back and with an even worse diagnosis.
Anyways, there was one nurse. Lynn was her name. She spent a lot of time with me. She truly got to know me and after day 4 in the hospital, I finally confessed to her that I was really bored with watching TV and pretending to sleep all day. She asked me what I wanted to do and I told her I wanted to draw and sketch. She came back from her days off with a HUGE bag full of brand spanking new art supplies that she had bought out of her own money just for me and the only thing she wanted in return was for me to draw her something.
She also made me a friendship bracelet and I still have it.
My grandmother was a nurse and one of the most caring people I have ever known, besides my sister (who is thinking of going into nursing). The amount of time and care these people put into their jobs and the people they work with is truly inspiring. Love to all nurses.

Get a rat and put it in a cage and give it two water bottles. One is just water, and one is water laced with either heroin or cocaine. If you do that, the rat will almost always prefer the drugged water and almost always kill itself very quickly, right, within a couple of weeks. So there you go. It’s our theory of addiction.

None of them ever use in a way that looks like compulsion or addiction. There’s a really interesting human example I’ll tell you about in a minute, but what Bruce says is that shows that both the right-wing and left-wing theories of addiction are wrong. So the right-wing theory is it’s a moral failing, you’re a hedonist, you party too hard. The left-wing theory is it takes you over, your brain is hijacked. Bruce says it’s not your morality, it’s not your brain; it’s your cage. Addiction is largely an adaptation to your environment.

We’ve created a hyperconsumerist, hyperindividualist, isolated world that is, for a lot of people, much more like that first cage than it is like the bonded, connected cages that we need.
The opposite of addiction is not sobriety. The opposite of addiction is connection. And our whole society, the engine of our society, is geared towards making us connect with things. If you are not a good consumer capitalist citizen, if you’re spending your time bonding with the people around you and not buying stuff—in fact, we are trained from a very young age to focus our hopes and our dreams and our ambitions on things we can buy and consume. And drug addiction is really a subset of that.
With the amount of “stop, drop, and roll” education I received growing up, I kinda thought catching on fire would be a more common problem as an adult.
