the hunger games aren’t amazingly unique or flawless or anything but I think katniss as a character is very important and i think the media misunderstands

we aren’t in it for the cute boys. we’re in it for katniss. thousands of young girls were introduced to an introverted, angry girl born into poverty and watched her become the savior of the world and the media doesn’t seem to understand that she, as a character, is important to girls. not who she dates, but her

Who’s Alex?

Billboard demonstrating gender stereotypes as most people automatically assume that Alex is the boy.

Actually, I’ve studied design and advertising, and I can tell you that the reason people would look at this and immediately assume Alex is the boy is because, quite simply, the boy is the focal point of the ad.

English-speaking readers’ line of sight goes from left to right and up to down. This ad leads the viewer from the words MEET ALEX etc straight to the boy and then over and down to the girl. I didn’t even notice there was a set of parenthesis with words in them in the ad until I looked the fourth time.

This is a fallacious confirmation bias, as anyone looking at it will assume Alex is the focal point (i.e. The Boy) and then if they’re perceptive they’ll notice the words at the bottom. Aha! Those damn gender stereotypes gotcha again! Except no, because the ad literally forces you to read it as “Alex is the boy” by the visual language and lines of sight.

A better ad would have been structured from top to bottom instead of left to right, and wouldn’t have pushed the girl, the real subject of the ad (who, by the way, has been VISUALLY PUSHED OUT OF HER RIGHTFUL SPACE ON THE AD BY HER BROTHER) off to the corner as far away from her identifiers as possible.

Here, I’ll make you a better ad.

Bam. Shitty stock photo but you get the point. If anyone sees this and assumes Alex is the boy, they don’t have the the ad layout to use as an excuse for their internalized gender shittery. Likewise, the ad isn’t actively trying to make you read it a certain way and THEN making you feel guilty for interpreting it the way they designed it to be.

Thank got someone pointed this out… I didn’t have the energy to do it.

Agreed with urulokid. And I certainly like urulokid’s version of the ad.

I was thinking the same thing when I originally saw this post, but then I ignored that instinct and kept scrolling. So I’m glad someone laid that counter argument out so beautifully.

I feel like this person has had to endure the real world at some point because they put “tax free” after a million buck and thats a pretty important detail

Thank you for recognizing my working-class struggle

I think an important thing for white people at this point is to avoid saying “we are Micheal Brown” and start saying “we refuse to be Darren Wilson”.

***SIGNAL BOOST***

Please help this kitty! This kind person saved his life and now desperately needs help to pay for his vet bills.

“I was taking the garbage out a few nights ago and I heard a crying coming from inside the dumpster, I lifted the lid and saw something moving inside of a cardboard box, I couldn’t reach it unless I jumped into the dumpster. I grabbed the box and opened it and there was a kitten covered in and surrounded by lots of blood. I started crying, the poor thing looked as if it had been beaten with a baseball bat or a stick. He couldn’t move his hind legs at all. I rushed him to the emergency vet. They told me he needed surgery and possible amputation of his tail. I had NO choice but to pay for anything this beautiful creature needed. His tail was saved but he can’t use his back legs. He was malnourished, dehydrated and some teeth had been knocked out, I cry just thinking back to that horrible night. He was covered with infections and sores, scrapes.

This first visit cleaned me out completely. Left my account in the negative. I took time from work because he needs around the clock wound care and drainage tube changing. He is such a lover boy and this is his forever home with me, where he will never worry about anyone hurting him again.

I am asking, well really begging you…one animal lover to the next to please help me get out of this hole I am in now. Please, I am really worried about all of this. The first visit cost almost $1400 for the surgeries and the second follow up visit cost me almost $600 which I wrote a bad check for but i have since told my vet that I did that and she agreed to give me time to pay it off. I am in a bad place right now.

Thank you for anything you can do to help me. ”

i like this but i don’t fully understand it…

whoa

you don’t understand how sad this is. each adult is a cross, and each child has been crucified by said cross.

  • the priest (i assume he’s a priest, correct me if i’m wrong) killed the little boy in one way or another, probably rape, which is common among corrupted clergy men.
  • the tourist comes to an overcrowded, poverty stricken country, taking up any and all resources that could have gone to the little native girl
  • the soldier comes to fight for his country, but ends up killing the innocent girl, probably in her village.
  • the little boy dies under the doctor’s knife
  • the man kills the little girl in a school shooting (represented with the uniform)
  • the “fat” kid is killed by obesity caused by a fast food epidemic in america, most commonly mcdonald’s, shown by ronald mcdonald himself.

this is /haunting/ to look at. children can die at anyone’s hand. even the “heros”

Just to clarify that the little boy dying under the doctor’s knife is because the doctor is stealing his organs to sell in the black market, hence the cooler at their feet which alludes to keeping the organ alive and stable for selling. This is such a strong photo set, really induces a sense of disgust and sadness.

I cried a little

also, the little girl on the tourists back represents the huge child sex industry in south east Asia, popular among tourists

THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER

In all seriousness I made this because it’s one of my pet peeves for guys to assume I’m dressing up/wearing makeup for THEM, but then after I made this, I’m like holy shit I made that hair dryer fuck that shoe. So then I had two reasons to put it on tumblr.
