Map of the World by Natural Skin Color
i’m really dumbfounded that i never realized skin colour is literally just caused by being closer to or farther from the equator and the resulting sun exposure and skin darkening
actually, its an adaptation. natural selection. people with darker skin are selected for in areas near the equator, where the melanin that causes the darker color protects them from radiation and protects them from skin cancer and other health defects, and because they are healthier they can pass on that trait more. people near the poles have lighter skin because it allows them absorb more of the limited sunlight to convert to vitamin d.
THIS IS THE THING SOME PEOPLE HATE OTHER PEOPLE OVER.
Evolution of melanin levels based on geographical location.

Have you ever seen the research capacity of fandom? It’s incredible. Turns out he had Snickers and Hershey’s in the 1940s but he’d be pretty alarmed to find the kind of apples he used to eat are extinct and chickens are now three times as big. Turns out his sex education would be better than the kind in schools now, and that living through the Great Depression might put him into a state of grim nostalgia regarding the failures of the current banking system. Turns out Steve Rogers lived in a queer neighborhood, six blocks from an “artsy queer house,” and he wouldn’t say “under God” during the pledge of allegiance.

mockingbirdie asked: Cap visits a school assembly and they have him lead the pledge of allegiance but "under God" wasn't added until he went under the ice so he doesn't know that part so he doesn't say it and the next day all the headlines say "CAPTAIN AMERICA FORGETS GOD" and FoxNews freaks out.
oh my god
#fox news: captain america’s anti-god communist agenda #fox news: why does cap hate god? #fox news: cap has been henpecked by the left #media matters reports on facts regarding the pledge and the use of ‘under god’ #rachel maddow facepalms greatly and invites cap onto the show #fox news runs segment about captain america being bought by the leftist media like rachel maddow #which then gets mocked on tds #where jon stewart wants to know what hawkeye thinks about the national anthem and then says #oh right #no one cares about hawkeye
But anyway, I recently sat down to figure out exactly where Steve’s local gay bars would be, or where the closest ones would be, for purposes of plotting things out, and uh … turns out that Steve Rogers lived in the MIDDLE of the biggest cruising/gay bar/gay hangouts area of Brooklyn. Like, a couple blocks from the St. George Hotel, which was almost entirely gay by the early 40s.
This is actually a really great, fascinating essay (by thingswithwings) on the area and time Steve grew up in. The whole idea that Steve (and Bucky even more) would be completely, totally clueless seems even more ridiculous when you really look at this stuff.
I sometimes have to keep myself from commenting on posts about Steve Rogers and how his life was back in the day. Because WOW some folks don’t know anything about history!
Where are the posts about Steve snarling about Hoovervilles? How are people not taking advantage of how one of the reasons…
i fucking love whenever people are like “how would steve rogers react to the fact that people now curse and talk about sex?”
yo
he grew up as a poor orphan in Brooklyn and joined the fucking army i think he’s got that shit covered
Also, remember that the 1935-40s had BETTER and MORE HONEST sex education than we get now.
In all likelihood what would REALLY shock Steve would be the way that sex ed is taught, not that sex ed is taught.
