Annie is 100% fictitious. It also tells the story of an Irish-American orphan during the great depression, a time when Irish-Americans were heavily discriminated against and Annie would have had little chance of getting adopted due to her ethnicity. The new movie is a modernized version of Annie and casting a black Annie is keeping true to the spirit of the original story: a girl who had little chance of getting adopted finding a loving home with someone who could give her everything she ever dreamed of
