This was hands down one of my favorite scenes of the movie because I recognized so many people from Cap 2 and it made me so happy. Like not just tech guy who said no to Rumlow but also the guy who tried to get the doors shut was there and a few others. It makes me so happy to see all of them again and I hope we see them in future movies to because they’re awesome. Also can we talk about Tasha’s smile? Because you know she’s thinking about how *this* was the SHIELD she signed up for and how happy she is it does exist and isn’t just another let down.

I fully believe that (like everyone else) Pietro and Wanda thought they were working with S.H.I.E.L.D., and had no idea until the start of this movie that it was really HYDRA, so they were under the impression that that was what S.H.I.E.L.D. was. People like Strucker, doing whatever they please with no concern for anything but gaining power. You will never convince me that at some point on the way back from Korea, Steve didn’t talk to them about this, and assure them that they’re right to feel the way they do, that the version of S.H.I.E.L.D. they joined was everything wrong with it. Not just the fact that it was controlled by HYDRA, but that it was about dishing out punishment before crimes and gaining power even if innocent people get hurt along the way. And I think Steve would’ve told them about Peggy, about the purpose she originally helped found S.H.I.E.L.D. for–to protect the innocent.
So when Pietro turns to Steve and Natasha–S.H.I.E.L.D.’s inspiration and most loyal member, respectively–to ask them “this is S.H.I.E.L.D.?” and there’s that awed smile on his face, it’s not just about relief that they have backup. It’s seeing for the first time in years that there are people he and Wanda can count on. People who really will do what’s right. And seeing that if a mistake as gigantic as S.H.I.E.L.D. can turn into something great, so can they.
