Republicans have more fear of a ‘felon with a vote’ than a ‘felon with a gun’.
Just to be clear, this is actually a rather logical, albeit completely disgusting, strategy when considered politically.
Given that black men are disproportionately incarcerated, granting them the right to vote would weaken Republican control. However, providing weapons to people who have committed felonies actually helps Republicans by perpetuating the violence that keeps people preoccupied with immediate safety and unable to really do much about the big picture.
