Humanism, Egalitarianism, and Feminism
- It is a common misconception that feminism focuses only on women, leading many to term themselves as “humanists instead of feminists”. However, humanism actually refers to the philosophical stance that promotes the value of human beings, in and of itself, without the need for relying on religious and/or supernatural powers. Many humanists are also feminists, some as a result of their humanist beliefs, but the two movements remain separate. It is absolutely possible that you subscribe to both movements, but they cannot be substituted for each other.
- Why “Feminism”, Not Just “Humanism”?
- Feminism, Not “Equalism” Or “Humanism”
- While the egalitarian movement advocates equality for all people, it is important to distinguish between giving everyone the same thing as opposed to giving everyone access to equal opportunities for progress. Giving everyone the same handout is only fair when everyone begins their progress from the same place. In the real world, different people are born into different circumstances that greatly vary their chances of progress and success. Feminism recognizes that the patriarchal and sexist systems already create an imbalance of power and privilege among people of different genders. Resources in such a society would be better used if more are allocated to those individuals who have relatively less. It makes more sense to give two buns to a hungry child, than to give one to the hungry child and the other to a child who has already had dinner.

Pro-Choice
- Everyone deserves the right to make an informed choice on whether they continue a pregnancy, and to know what options they have. If they choose to have their pregnancy terminated, they deserve to have that choice respected as much as if they had chosen to continue with the pregnancy.
