Unlike Godzilla, Pacific Rim doesn’t try to be serious even when it’s being serious. Characters have names like Stacker Pentecost and Hercules Hansen. The film requires you to believe that the best way to battle a giant monster is to build an even larger robot to fight that monster.

Much of the Act 2 drama derives from inter-pilot tension airlifted from the Val Kilmer scenes in Top Gun. It’s the polar opposite of the Godzilla school of drama, where everyone is a total professional who has absolutely no personal goal besides Saving The World. In Pacific Rim, Idris Elba is Rinko Kikuchi’s Obi-Wan Kenobi, and two of the last Giant Robot-pilots in the world frequently get into sneering fights over who’s the bigger badass, and Charlie Day is a scientist.

So, for all these reasons, Pacific Rim is a movie that I’ve heard perfectly smart people describe as “stupid” or “silly.” The problem with this line of thinking is that, really, that every blockbuster is pretty “silly,” in the context of Things Adults Should Care About. Godzilla is not less stupid than Pacific Rim just because people frown more. […]

The difference, I think, is that Pacific Rim glories in its own silliness. There’s a flashback scene where Idris Elba rescues a little girl, and when he emerges from his giant robot, the sun shines upon him like he’s the catharsis in a biblical epic. There’s a moment when one giant robot swings an oil tanker like a sword. Then it grows a sword out of its wrist. Then it falls from space to earth.

There are real complaints to make about Pacific Rim, I guess, all of them fair and most of them pedantic. I know a lot of people who have issues with the story. (“Why didn’t they use the wrist-sword earlier?” is a popular one.) Conversely, I don’t really know anyone who minds the story in Godzilla, possibly because everything stupid that happens is prefaced by Frowning Watanabe saying “This is why the stupid thing that’s about to happen makes sense.” Godzilla wants so badly to make sense. Pacific Rim wants so badly for Ron Perlman to wear golden shoes.

#SHE FUCKING FLOORS HIM AND HE COULD NOT BE HAPPIER WHEN THEY’RE DONE

Can we just…

Look at the way she helps him up. She is TINY and he is so MASSIVE in comparison and she just full on pulls him and he just goes gleefully.

A++ casting.

"TURNS out two heads really are better than one. Two people have successfully steered a virtual spacecraft by combining the power of their thoughts - and their efforts were far more accurate than one person acting alone. One day groups of people hooked up to brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) might work together to control complex robotic and telepresence systems, maybe even in space."

Becket, this is Mako Mori.

But look how they perceived each other too. This memory isn’t an exact one (memories rarely are). Raleigh’s perception of Mako was very close up and she’s this stunning, slightly sad, closed off thing framed by her umbrella like a halo. She looks exquisite and unapproachable in a way. Mako’s perception of Raleigh has him looking far more serious and sad than he actually looked when they met. The camera angle zooms in like she was suddenly really taking in who this guy was and he looks forbidding and far more warrior like than he ever does in real life. If you notice, that one frame makes him look more like Stacker than any other moment in that movie. If that was her perception, something about Raleigh ALREADY reminded her of the level of command her father had and not only is she the only one in the movie who sees that, but we realize it’s an internal thing on Raleigh’s part because he doesn’t ACT like Stacker, but he sure has the same grit.

I so love when people see things I miss! When I saw these gifs together, my jaw dropped. They actually took the time to refilm their first meeting. Blows my mind how much thought they put into the drift sequences. I wish we could get a point by point explanation of each drift cause there is a lot in there we don’t understand.

words-writ-in-starlight:

I write.  I swear to God.  I actually love writing fanfic.  BUT, and here’s the catch, I have a ton of trouble coming up with short fic ideas.  Short anything ideas, really.  The most memorable example is that one time I decided to write how I thought someone being able to see the future would pan out, just a few pages of character study, dicking around with super powers, nothing fancy.  Smash cut to a year and a half later, I’m wrapping up my 350 page novel and staring dismally at my 200 additional pages of worldbuilding.  And it’s always like that, it gets so out of hand.

SO.  My solution to that is this.  If you have a craving for a specific pairing that you know I ship, shoot me a prompt and I’ll throw together a short fic for you and post it.  I’m trying to unwind after finals, so it’ll be good for me, and you’ll get fic, so it’ll be good for you.

Hit me up.

This is your reminder that I’m bored and open for prompts.

Actually, this is a comment that they made Steve Rogers HYDRA in the most recent comic and I’m incredibly upset about it, so send me prompts so I have something else to think about.
