It seems like the first rule of magic, or at least the first limitation mentioned, is usually ‘you can’t bring back the dead.’

And I know it makes sense from a writing standpoint, but I also wonder if it comes from somewhere else. If that’s just the first, most common human response to hearing that magic is possible.

Maybe the first question was, ‘Are the dead still going to stay dead?’ for so long that people stopped needing to say it, that it just got answered right away. Yes, the world will still hurt. Chin up, you can make fire from your fingertips. Maybe you can hurt it back.

The sorting hat didn’t listen to Harry, and yelled for everyone to hear, “Slytherin!”.

Seeing Harry’s distress, Ron Weasley’s eyes narrowed in determination. Minutes later, as Ron’s name was called by Minerva McGonagall, and as the sorting hat was lowered onto his head, all of the Hogwarts residents knew without a doubt what the sorting hat was going to say.

Imagine their surprise when the sorting hat instead said with resignation in his tone “Slytherin”

darthstitch:

It always pisses me off whenever fic writers forget that Steve Rogers also had a shit-ton of Bad Things to happen to him or at least marginalize it because Bucky had it worse.

Look, I’m not arguing that it isn’t true.  Bucky’s definitely had the worst end of the whole deal so this isn’t and this shouldn’t be a contest in which, “Your pain and experience is worse, so you should get help and we’ll just ignore the other guy.”

Consider the shit Steve’s gone through:

a.  Has PTSD.  Possible suicidal tendencies.  Depression.

b.  Has no other family or relatives to go home to - by the time Steve wakes up, any possible support system he might have had is long gone.  The Commandos are either dead or too old.  Peggy Carter is the same.  Bucky, of course, is out of the picture.  Steve has never come home from his war.  Never.

c.  Was apparently isolated by SHIELD in the first few days of his awakening and then pretty much manipulated into joining the group.  Also, the first thing SHIELD does to him is lie.  Nick Fury also lied to him about Phase 2 and while I don’t doubt Fury’s got better intentions than someone like Alexander Pierce…. that is not a good way to treat a man who’s led covert ops and been around spies in freakin’ World War II.

d.  SHIELD is actually HYDRA and has been torturing and brainwashing and fucking over Steve’s Best Friend and Only Family.  So basically, Steve died for nothing.

e.  The entirety of the whole Winter Soldier mess.

f.   Everything special about you came from a bottle.  I honestly think those words still haunt Steve, especially in the wake of the whole Winter Soldier shitstorm.

g.  Is still expected to be Captain America, beacon of hope and justice and right and he still pushes on, even as he deals with a world that’s vastly different from what he knows, with people who constantly remind him that he’s out of touch and out of sync, even if it’s in a good-natured, teasing way, even as he comes to grips with the fact that Bucky, his best friend, will never be the man he’s known and the fact that he should have jumped after his friend on the train, even as Bucky, with his memory all FUBAR’d, jumped after him on the helicarrier.  TL;DR - Steve deals with a poison stew of grief and guilt and anger on a daily basis.

Seriously, the only one I’ve seen who pretty much just comes close to understanding the crap he’s gone through is Sam Wilson.  Who gets that it’s not a contest of who got the worst experience - just recognizes that Steve is also in pain and hurting and shouldn’t be shuffled aside and told to “walk it off” because Bucky is the tortured POW, not him.  TL;DR:  Steve Rogers also needs a hug.  A LOT of hugs.  A LOT of kindness and understanding.  Especially from the people who are supposed to be his friends.

"‘I’ve spoken with Disney people, and they were completely blindsided by the reaction to the new Star Wars characters,’ Marcotte went on to say. ‘They put a huge investment into marketing and merchandizing the Kylo Ren character. They presumed he would be the big breakout role from the film. They were completely surprised when it was Rey everyone identified with and wanted to see more of. Now they’re stuck with vast amounts of Kylo Ren product that is not moving, and a tidal wave of complaints about a lack of Rey items.’"

Michael Boehm, “Where’s Rey?”, Sweatpants and Coffee

The interesting thing about this to me (though entirely anecdotal) is that I’ve spoken to a lot of different people about the new movie. Among my friend group and sort of casual folk, men and women alike, people generally responded well to all characters, with maybe slight preference for Rey or Poe.

Among the Hollywood working men I’ve talked to: Kylo Ren. Unanimously, no question.

Which has interested me for many different reasons and will continue to be something I puzzle out but I can’t help but specifically with this, if true, wonder: To what extent are these decisions about what kids want being made purely from the perspective of a very specific subsection of society?

(via sarasarai)

You know, I went to see TFA completely fresh-faced regarding Star Wars. I only saw the prequels as a kid when I understood shit of what was happening. Never saw the original trilogy. All I knew of Star Wars I picked up by pop culture osmosis.

And Kylo Ren did NOTHING for me. NOTHING. I didn’t care about him. I really didn’t. The hell did I know of this kid? Do I have any idea why he went to the Dark Side? None whatsoever. He wants to be like his evil grandparent, okay…. why, exactly? What does he want? What the fuck is he upset about?

Rey and Finn I got. Rey and Finn they explained to me. Rey and Finn they made me care about. The only reason I had to be invested in Kylo Ren was his parents, but his parents meant nothing to me.

So aside from what’s carried over from the other Star Wars movies, I literally see NO reason why Kylo Ren is interesting or appealing. None. At all. And THAT’s the guy they expected me to be excited about? (If this is true)

Fucking honestly.

bookishwordish:

Harry was sure in that instant they were both wondering the same thing.

This is such a dark moment and I’ve never seen it talked about before!?!

The suggestion that Harry ‘I will turn this broom around to save Malfoy even though this room is filled with cursed fire and I have a Horcrux to destroy’ Potter might not have rushed to the rescue of Vernon Dursley is… woah.

It says a lot about the neglect and abuse Harry suffered with the Dursleys that he isn’t at all sure he’d want to rescue Vernon. Dudley does redeem himself. Harry has occasional moments of connection with Petunia, like in OoTP when he tells her Voldemort has returned. But Uncle Vernon? There is never, ever a moment of kindness or understanding between them.

MORE than that, Vernon suspects that Harry wouldn’t rush to his aid if he were captured. Does he assume this is because Harry has no interest in helping ‘his lot’?? Or because he knows, deep down, that his treatment of Harry really has been appalling and Harry has no reason to love him or worry about him??

It’s just a tiny little moment between these two characters, but it says so much about their (totally awful & dysfunctional) relationship. Lastly, I bet this is the only moment in the series where both Harry and Vernon are wondering the same thing simultaneously.

Possessiveness 101

Totally cool: “Hey, do you want to be exclusive?”

Red flag: “No one but me is allowed to touch you.”

Totally cool: “It makes me feel weird when you flirt with other people, can we talk about that?”

Red flag: “If you loved me, you would stop being friends with them. You KNOW it makes me jealous.”

Totally cool: “I hope we’re together forever. I’m so in this for the long haul.”

Red flag: “If you ever left me, I would kill myself.”

Totally cool: “Your mom is really unkind to me, can we try to minimize how often you bring me when you visit her?”

Red flag: “Your mom hates me, you need to stop talking to her. She’s trying to ruin our relationship.”

Totally cool: “I love you so much, oh my god.”

Red flag: “It’s a good thing I love you so much, because no one else would. You’d be alone forever without me.”

Other important red flags to keep in mind: someone who wants to jump into emotional/financial co-dependence very fast (like moving in together right away, or becoming each other’s only confidantes right away) and won’t take no for an answer; someone who tries to minimize how often you leave the house or interact with other people; someone who threatens you or themselves or your family or pets or possessions or financial future; someone who uses guilt to keep you from leaving a relationship.

Very important reminder: You do not need a reason to leave a relationship. Neither does the other person (or people). A relationship is over when one of the people in it says it’s over, period. Obviously it’s kind to take the end of a long relationship seriously, but abusers and manipulators have lost the right to that conversation. Lie if you need to–your safety is much more important than their feelings.

Trust your instincts!

“I just made sure it took” for unedopinion & anonymous.

I could write FOREVER about Nathan Ford and his beliefs and how he never really left the seminary but ultimately became an Avenger of the Lord instead and how biblical narratives of injustice and revenge back his every last fucking move and how that is even more incredible for how he mostly he has absolutely no idea (though everyone else does) until the moment when he looks at his life, looks at his choices, and goes â€œI should get out before I become a realfacts supervillain” and retires but instead, let’s remember the last scene from The Boiler Room Job:

Latimer: To a one, you rained destruction down upon them, allowing me to profit in the wreckage you left behind.

Nate: You will get out of my business now.

Latimer: But you haven’t even heard my offer.

Nate: I don’t want anything from you.

Latimer: And the ones that got away with it? The companies that covered it up so well, the people they cheated or killed had no idea what happened to them. I know secrets, sins it would take you a thousand years to find.

Nate: What’s the price?

Latimer: 24 hours. But before you descend from heaven with blood-tipped wings and a flaming sword to wreak havoc on these men, you call and give me 24 hours to make my move.

(Nate walks away)

Latimer: Your pride more important than helping people?

(Nate pauses to look back at him, then walks away)

Latimer was never adequately devious to have a chance in hell of winning against Nate Ford, but you have to give him Genre Awareness. He understood the narrative and his place in it.
