man imagine aliens w no concept of interspecies cooperation or pets

‘commander the scan of this shelter reveals three primary lifeforms’

‘excellent. elaborate please’

‘all mammals. two quadrupeds, one feline and one canine, as well as one biped sapien. they appear to be… relaxing and eating in a shared space’

‘what the fuck’

imagine these guys trying to be really polite about it because for some reason the bipeds really enjoy harboring these strange freeloading carnivores. an alien warlord meeting some diplomat’s cat and being all tentatively like ‘ah… yes. your parasite is remarkably large and complacent. you are no doubt a very well-used host and oh my stars don’t let it touch me no no NO.

“but what function do they serve”

“well sometimes they catch pests or protect us from intruders”

“ah I see very sensible”

“but mostly we just hug them whether they want us to or not”

“…………what the fuck”

my favourite thing about big dogs is when you push ‘em over they’re just like

“oh i’m lying down now! someone might scratch my stomach!!! i might nap!! endless possibilities!!!’

Whereas you push little dogs over and they’re all like “Vengeance! Death before dishonor!”

Yes, if you react in a way similar to how another dog would react to accidentally harming a play mate or a pack mate.

That’s why, when dogs are playing (especially noticeable in puppies, as they’re still learning bite inhibition), and one dog yelps loudly and sharply, like a dog does if you step on its paw or tail, if you react by immediately jumping back, not doing the thing again, and giving friendly, appeasing gestures (nice petting, ear scratching, chin scratching, etc…or if you were another dog, submissive gestures, muzzle licking, things that say ‘nono sorry! I’m not a threat to you!”) the dog does, in fact, realize that you weren’t attacking or trying to be mean and that it was accidental.

That’s also why advice to puppy owners or owners trying to retrain a dog that was never taught to not bite during play are advised to yelp like a hurt dog if their puppy/dog gets too rough and immediately stop play and turn away, because that’s a clear signal to the dog that they hurt you and you’re upset now.

Most dogs will immediately ‘apologize’ in dog language for that as, especially if it was during play, their intent wasn’t to hurt anyone, just to have fun. They’ll also tend to react that way if you yelp if they step on you. I know I’ve yelped at Bear a few times because his big 105lb ass is HEAVY and does not feel nice on a foot.

Woah the reverse tactic wow

SCIENCE HAS CONFIRMED THAT DOGS LOVE US BACK BECAUSE THEY GET THE SAME RUSH OF OXYTOCIN WHEN THEY LOOK AT US THAT WE GET WHEN WE LOOK AT THEM

Are you telling me that dogs are looking up to us and think “omg what an adorable fucking cutiepie”?

a while ago I read an article about how dogs love us back, but recognize that we’re different from them, while cats see us as bigger and clumsier than them, but do not consider us different

Dogs: I am fuzzy creature and you are a different adorable creature and I love you!!!!!
Cats: I am lanky and graceful and you are a giant mess

This is why cats occasionally try to bathe and feed us

It’s true; cats see us as giant dumb hairless babies. That’s why they bring us half-dead prey– to teach us how to hunt and eat properly. That’s why they attack when we rub their bellies– that’s how parent cats teach kittens to defend themselves. That’s also why they meow– cats communicate with other adults on a frequency we can’t hear, but meow at kittens because their ears aren’t fully developed. They even specialized a set of meows they use only for humans, because we are especially deaf babies.

We are all of us dumb kittens.
