This is mostly due to my own medical ignorance, but can anyone explain how Max was able to stop Furiosa’s lungs from collapsing by stabbing her a second time?

someone has maybe already answered this in a better way buT

The way I understand it, when your lungs collapse basically the air that should be going into them is going into the chest cavity instead? So the pressure is backwards (the low pressure in the lungs as opposed to the chest cavity keeps the lungs collapsed). Punching another hole lets the excess air in the chest cavity escape and allows the lungs to re-inflate.

At least, I’m p sure that’s right lol

*bursts in uninvited*

Yeah, you’re basically right.  So the first stab wound causes a punctured lung, yeah?  Which means that every time she takes a breath, instead of inflating the lung like a balloon, the air rushes out of the hole in the lung into the lower pressure area between her lung and her chest wall.  Because of the angle at which the knife originally went in, the air can’t escape, and instead each inhale increases the amount of air filling her chest cavity (this is called a pneumothorax; it can also happen with blood, which is called a hemothorax).  This means that the lung doesn’t expand as much with each breath, as the pneumothorax takes up space that the lung would usually occupy, and eventually the pressure of the air will collapse the punctured lung completely, at which point the air pocket will actually spill over into the other side and collapse the other lung.  The ‘rattle’ you hear in Furiosa’s breathing is a result of breathing with a punctured lung and fighting to inflate her lungs around the blockage of air.  What Max does by stabbing her a second time (you’ll notice that he takes a certain amount of care to ensure that the knife goes in at a particular angle) is ensure that there’s a way for this air pocket to escape, letting her damaged lung inflate properly.  When he keeps his hand over it as he moves away and arranges cloth over it, it’s an attempt to make it a valve, so that the air will only move out of her chest, not into her chest.  This is actually the best treatment for a pneumothorax (although…um, if someone has a pneumothorax, maybe call emergency services rather than going for your knife block, yes?) and some reasonably good science.  While we’re on the subject, Max’s method of blood transfusion (straight from one vein to another) was the first way people did it when they were first figuring it out.  They had a lot of deaths because they wouldn’t figure out blood types for a while yet (pro-tip: do not transfuse across blood types).  Since his blood pressure is higher than Furiosa’s is while she’s literally bleeding out, he’s the de facto donor.  Also decent science.

  • something that has me thinking and practically glowing with happiness is that we don’t really see the inside of the rig when furiosa is bargaining with the motorcycle gang, so as things are slowly going to shit and she’s considering yelling out to max he must be feeling it too because the rig immediately starts moving when she screams
  • so he’s got to have climbed out of the hold by then, waiting crouched by the seat so he’s invisible but still ready to input the sequence because she trusted him and he has a job to do
  • and i love that they don’t show it to us i love that the rig just starts moving
  • i dont know why im so weak about this ANYWAY

  • and just how fucking gentle max is with furiosa in the end his soft little ‘hey hey hey’s like please please please
  • so quiet and soft even though he’s fidgeting and freaking the fuck out and mumbling under his breath he is gentle not just with furiosa but with the girls as well
  • saying please and thank you when they help him out, cupping furiosa’s head, touching her face, constantly talking to her, reassuring her, APOLOGIZING???? TWICE??? once when he’s re-inflating her lungs and the second time when he’s putting the needle in her arm im hugely upset about this
  • “IM SO SORRY”
  • HONESTLY DON’
  • “take me home, take me home”
  • ohhhhh my god
  • ohHHHHH MY GOD
  • and max’s 0 fucking hesitation to give her his blood the second she passes out. honestly he doesn’t even take a second to think about it. even though he’s been in fucking chains because of his blood, been called “blood bag” the whole movie, been treated like livestock, he doesn’t even hesitate. his choice is already made the second the idea occurs to him. im just really sad because it speaks volumes to how liberally humans are capable of giving when they are allowed a choice and this fucks me up big time im really not fine
  • “Max. My name is max. That’s my name”
  • nodding to himself like he’s finally convinced
  • “what’s your name?” “does it matter?”
  • IT MATTERS FRIENDS IT FINALLY MATTERS
  • THAT FINAL LOOK OF MUTUAL THANKS AND SOFT SMILES
  • WHEN WILL THIS MOVIE LET ME LIVE
  • NEVER IT WILL NEVER LET ME LIVE

My favorite part was when The Dag turns around to look at Furiosa after she was stabbed and the music gets all heavy, the other cars pull in front of them, it seems like everything that can go wrong did go wrong and for like a fraction of a second you just think like, “this movie has averted cliches and tropes left and right, what if they really lose?” And then Nux. He fixes the engine and they pull back ahead.
I’m sorry but that is just the fucking best.

Had to reblogging again for that^^^ cuz I got the same exact feeling when I first watched it. In fact I still get twinges of “uh oh. What if this time around they-”
That is a sure sign of fucking awesome writing. FOR REAL.

Since I know there’s probably a fair amount of you out there who haven’t seen the first three Mad Max movies, I’m here to tell you a li’l secret about them:

All the people complaining about how Max “isn’t the main character” in Fury Road are big ol’ Fake Fanboys cause Max’s primary character trait in literally every movie is “I hate this, why is it happening, please leave me alone to brood in the desert in peace”.

He’s much more the central focus of the plot in the first movie but in Road Warrior and Thunder Dome he basically just gets kidnapped or beat up by wankers in weird bondage outfits and spends the rest of the movie trying to leave as soon as possible while other people are like “please solve our absurd post-apocalyptic problems”.  There is not one single point where Max actively seeks out being a hero until it is forced upon him.  He ACTIVELY TELLS PEOPLE WHO ASK HIM FOR HELP to take a hike.

Mad Max himself would like nothing better than to never, ever, ever be the main character.

He would also like for people to stop stealing his fucking car.

Nobody wants to escape his own movies more than Max Rockatansky

He understands better than his own fanboys that his life sucks and you don’t want to be like him, to be Max is humiliating and painful. Every time he gets dragged into a conflict, he ends up worse than he started. Max seems to realize no good can come of this, and is weirdly genre-savvy because he’s always trying to make a getaway at the first signs of encroaching Plot. I find this darkly comical and endearing – at no point does he snap off witty quips and save the day and get the girl. Ever. He’s perpetually a weird desert loser with terrible luck. It’s great.

What makes Max a badass is the ability to survive to the end of any movie he’s unfortunate enough to find himself in.

@blackstump’s tags:  one of my fave things about the series tbh mad max road warrior beyond thunderdome fury road lololol max rockatansky straight up the part in fury road where he chooses to catch up with furiosa and the vuvulini and convinces them to go back? i saw a lot of oldschool fans being like THIS SHOW OF AGENCY SEEMS A LITTLE OOC.

"Mad Max: Fury Road. Say anything bad about Fury Road and I will plant you on a fucking spike. This movie is too good for the Oscars. They should have pulled the movie from consideration and set up their own award ceremony for it, complete with tricked-out hot rods and double guitars. If anything, the Oscars will just ruin this movie. If George Miller wins, I want him to mount the statue on the hood of a ZZ Top coupe and drive it over the corpse of Jack Valenti."

WHAT IS THE TRADITIONAL DANCE OF THE VUVALINI AND THE ANSWER CANNOT BE THE ELECTRIC SLIDE.

WE NEED HELP OKAY

I’m sorry, I know you need a real answer, but I’m just stuck on the fact that apparently y’all thought that the obvious answer was the Electric Slide and I just.  I just cannot.  Because.  I have this beautiful mental image of Keeper (who in this nice happy mental image is motherfuckin’ alive) teaching a bunch of Wretched plus the Sisters, Max, and Furiosa (who already knows the traditional dance but it’s been a long time, a lot of height, and a prosthetic arm since then, so she’s refining her technique) the ELECTRIC SLIDE.

What do I do with that mental image.

What.

Edit: FURIOSA TEACHING SOME EX-WARBOYS THE DANCE AFTER THE MOVIE?  AND IT BECOMES LIKE THIS THING?  YOU WIN A BATTLE AND BUST OUT THE FUCKIN’ ELECTRIC SLIDE I JUST.

Favorite practical effects: The war rig vs. the berm

for redshoesnblueskies

#SERIOUSLY#WORLD BUILDING#YOU ARE SO USED#TO your vehicle being ON FIRE that you have built something into it#to use the excessive sand of your environment#to make it NO LONGer on fire#oh my god  (via whisperingkuiperbelt)

There’s a lot of things I love about this, but one of them is that this movie is OK with fudging stuff to get the desired result. It’s completely obvious in this gif (and now when you go back to watch the movie) that the War Rig lines up with a nice neat line of fine sand to create this practical effect on location. However, the result looks fantastic onscreen so I just don’t care. (I can’t even imagine how lame this would look if they’d tried to do this CGI.)

It’s totally obvious that the rock riders in that scene are going off huge motocross jumps too. But, who cares? It is a ridiculously OTT world, we established that back when… not sure when, but at the very latest when the Doof showed up. And it’s used as backdrop for the actually cool stuff - the characters and their conflict - rather than trying to use the stunts to make the movie cool.

There is something in here about how to do world building and suspension of disbelief, but I can’t quite put it together yet.

Right…I think we will forgive a lot when we’re emotionally engaged–we either won’t notice or we won’t care. That’s the #1 thing. If a movie loses your emotional engagement, the illusion starts falling apart very quickly.

Also, I think MMFR really excels at setting a tone in its opening scenes and just committing to it all the way through. People are doing all kinds of bonkers stunts that you probably wouldn’t survive in real life…but we also see that they can get hurt and killed and captured and vehicles can crash and get destroyed. The movie does a really, really good job of blending a sense of genuine danger into all this kamikrazy action…which helps with the emotional engagement once again, because you are actually afraid for the characters.

BTW, I’m still in awe that the sand was a practical effect. I thought it was digitally enhanced with a particle simulation at least.

fuckyeahisawthat:

I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve watched Fury Road by now, but there’s always a few random things I notice or focus on more than the last time around. This time it was:

1. The way the exposed pipes on the front of the Gigahorse look like the tubing on Immortan Joe’s mask.

2. Slit saying “He was scanning the horizon” always always sounds like a Monty Python line to me. There’s just such a specificity to it that it makes me laugh every time.

3. The first glance between Furiosa and Max when he’s strapped to Nux’s car. Furiosa’s expression is not super easy to read here, but I think there’s a tiny flash of pity. Not like she’s about to help him–she’s got her own problems–but at least a genuine, “sucks to be you.”

4. The way the movie unites Max and Furiosa in action before they’ve ever interacted. They both almost get decapitated by the Buzzard buzzsaw and both have a moment when they breathe a sigh of relief, one right after the other, after it’s taken out of commission.

5. The transitions between diegetic and non-diegetic sound in this movie are siiiiick. The one I’m thinking of is the way the hollow bangs of Furiosa knocking sand off the Rig become part of the soundtrack as Max approaches the Rig.

6. When Max first rolls up to the Rig, Furiosa isn’t automatically hostile. Her first expression is wary and maybe a little curious? Even when he’s pointing the gun at her.

image

She only shifts into kill mode after he threatens Angharad with the gun.

image

7. Speaking of which…I can’t believe I never put this together before, but Max is basically using Angharad as a human shield when he’s drinking the water, making her stand between him and Furiosa with the gun pointed at her. Another instance of the taken by force/willingly given pattern.

8. “I saw it all. My own bloodbag, driving the Rig that killed her.” I find all the different interpretations of Angharad’s fall off the Rig fascinating. It’s such an important moment in the story, but there’s so much ambiguity in it. Of course Nux wouldn’t think to blame Joe for any of this, but he doesn’t even seem to particularly blame Max–he doesn’t show any hostility toward him at any point later. It’s more like he blames the machine, specifically, for failing her.

9. It’s impossible to pick a favorite action sequence in Fury Road but the nighttime stuff in the bog has a particular sense of terror to it. We know exactly how pissed Joe is now that Angharad’s baby is dead; the Bullet Farmer is coming for them and they keep. getting. stuck. It’s the most horror-like of all the sequences and it’s totally appropriate that it takes place at night.

It’s also the only time we see anyone firing any kind of rockets or mortars or really using any kind of long-range weapon (other than Furiosa’s sniper shots, which unsurprisingly also factor into this scene). Pretty much all the other weapons in the movie are things that you have to be close enough to your target to see them before you can fire. The mortar rounds are very effective as a scary escalation at a point when our protagonists already seem completely fucked.

10. Meeting the Vuvalini. The scream in the desert is the climax of the scene, but the thing that always gets me in the feels is moment after, “I can’t wait for them to see it.” “See what?” “Home.” There’s just this long beat of silence and you think oh no.

11. The tiny little crack in Max’s voice on “…you’ll go insane.” Just kill me now.

All of this very much (god, the crack in his voice just fucKING KILLS ME), but particularly the one about Nux’s perspective on Angharad’s death–that he almost seems to blame the War Rig rather than Max (who was driving) or even Furiosa (who’s really at the center of this whole thing).  I’ve kind of abstractly toyed with the thought before that the War Boys seem to consider cars/vehicles a nigh-living force in their world, and I’ve had a lot of trouble putting it into words but I’m going to give it a shot.

In their world, the War Boys seem to view themselves as one half of Joe’s army: the half with thumbs, the half that drives.  The other half, the sacred half, is the V8 engine, the car itself that they drive.  Nux is VERY protective of his position as driver of his particular car, both because of the status it affords him (obviously) and maybe because he considers the car…almost an ally?  A comrade in arms?  It would make sense, given the society that Joe sets up.  So maybe he does blame the War Rig.  Maybe there’s a part of Nux–a part that he knows is objectively foolish because he’s a blackthumb, he knows that cars don’t have thoughts or wills of their own, but a part that persists nonetheless–that thinks quietly that Furiosa betrayed them all and somehow convinced the War Rig to side with her.  The great and beautiful creation of Immortan Joe, THE War Rig, betraying him (and isn’t Furiosa a great and beautiful creation of Joe too, from that angle, all the parts ripped to pieces and put back together as something dangerous and unstoppable that he does not control nearly as much as he might have imagined?)
