but seriously though i’m sick and tired of those masterposts that are like “here! A reference site on Greek mythology for all your needs! Look it has all fifteen Greek gods on it!” And I’m like. tHERE WERE LIKE HUNDREDS OF FIGURES IN MYTHOLOGY YOUR CRAPPY HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL BIBLIOGRAPHY SITE MEANS NOTHING TO ME

if you want a basic outline of Greek mythology okay sure fine??? but like. if you want an extensive fucking reference site you are looking in the wrong goddamn places

as a self-declared greek mythology snob my reference site is fucking always this fucker right here. almost every single figure ever mentioned in a Greek text is on it, it has the most obscure gods, spirits, nymphs— it’s GREAT. You really wanna extend your mythological knowledge past the basic 12 and like four others? USE THEOI.  plus plus PLUS everything is cited so you can actually read the source material written about whoever it is you’re looking at.

fucking signal boost this. i’m so sick and tired of writer’s helpers blogs referring people to sites with as much information you would get from opening a third grade mythology book jesus chriiiiiist

Seconded

sometimes you say or do bad things while you’re in an awful mental place. sometimes you say things that are rude or uncalled for or manipulative. and i’m not going to hold that against you. mental illness is hard, and no one is perfect. but once you’re through that episode, you need to take steps to make amends. you need to apologize.

“i couldn’t help it, i was having a bad episode” is a justification, not an apology.

“i’m so fucking sorry, i fucked up, i don’t deserve to live, i should stop talking to anyone ever, i should die” is a second breakdown and a guilt trip. it is not an apology.

when you apologize, the focus should be on the person you hurt. “i’m sorry. i did something that was hurtful to you. even if i was having a rough time, you didn’t deserve to hear that,” is a better apology. if it was a small thing, you can leave it at that.

if you caused significant distress to the other person, this is a good time to talk about how you can minimize damage in the future. and again, even if it is tempting to say you should self-isolate and/or die, that is not a helpful suggestion. it will result in the person you’re talking to trying to talk you out of doing that, which makes your guilt the focus of the conversation instead of their hurt.

you deserve friendship, and you deserve support. but a supportive friend is not an emotional punching bag, and mental illness does not absolve you of responsibility for your actions. what you say during a mental breakdown doesn’t define you. how you deal with the aftermath though, says a lot.

This is the most carefully-nuanced discussion of this I think I have ever seen. Thank you for writing this.

Yes but if you’re in a situation where you can’t buy your school supplies (for example if you’re an orphan without inherited wealth like Tom Riddle) then there is in fact a Hogwarts fund to use so if you really can’t afford stuff you still don’t have to worry.

let’s all stop for a minute and thank jk rowling for not making the golden trio a love triangle

You know it’s funny, because I read the HP series when I was…oooh, eight, I believe–blew through the first six books in four days (the seventh wasn’t out yet). And I read a LOT, now and then, every book I could/can get my hands on, so I was already WELL AWARE of the whole “three friends, BUT WAIT, one is a GIRL, and they do stuff get shit done whatever, BUT WAIT, both boys want to do the kiss and the sex and the date with her, BUT WAIT, she doesn’t know which one she wants to do the aforementioned activities with and so the friendship breaks down because the world is shitty and the boys can’t get past it.” And at the time I was like “what is this sort of sick feeling in my stomach” as I plowed through these FUCKING AMAZING books. And in retrospect I’m just like “that was you worrying a lot about a love triangle, honey.” And I’m still kind of bemused and delighted that my fears did not come to pass.

This has been the story of how Moran kind of fucking hates love triangles.

okay but like can we talk about star trek just for one second.

because.

like.

so much tv and so many movies and so many books are all about how the future is a disaster because technology ends the world and aliens attack and humanity is awful.

and then there’s star trek.  motherfucking star trek.  where, yeah, shit goes wrong all the time, but technology lets us reach and grow and learn, and humanity builds itself starships and warp cores and makes contact with aliens and builds this interstellar family out of all these disparate cultures and it names its flagship Enterprise because that’s what it is, it’s this enterprise of hope and discovery, and no matter how often they all risk their necks and get in fights and end up shooting it out with the Borg or the Klingons or the Romulans or whatever, humanity still looks up at the stars and says “you know what, let’s boldly go, motherfuckers,” and that’s the kind of future I wanna see.

I, your Friendly Neighborhood Librarian absolve you from all literary sins and encourage you to go and read what you like on the platform of your choosing.

ilgaksu:

Never feel guilty for reading fan fic at 3am. Everything is fanfic in the end. From fanfic you were made, to fanfic you shall return.

Read that which has been panned by literary snobs. Read novels churned out by the dozen by authors with a dozen pseudonyms.

Read your US and People. Flip through Popular Science just for the gadgets section. Read articles about the perfect chocolate chip cookie.

Read books outside your comfort zone. Don’t finish them if you don’t want. It’s the book’s fault, not yours.

Read in your comfort zone. Read a YA and romance and science if and fantasy.

Skip over the boring bits. Read it because you heard about it from Oprah or because everyone else is reading it.

Giggle yourself silly at something so poorly written and full of author wish fulfillment that you just can’t stop reading it.

Don’t listen to the keepers of taste and culture. Their reward comes every time they pat themselves on the back for their superior taste.

Don’t listen to the academics that bemoan the downfall of society and learning. They have been doing that since Socrates’ time.

Don’t listen to the tv presenters who insist you are not cultured if you haven’t read from this list of books.

Audio books count as reading. Ebooks count as reading. Fanfic of questionable quality counts as reading. Rereading books for the third time counts as reading. Reading to your child counts as reading. Reading from the back of the cereal box (and doing the puzzle) counts as reading.

TL;DR: read what you want. Don’t be ashamed. Never let someone try to make you feel bad for how or what you read and enjoy. Tell them that I, your Friendly Neighborhood Librarian have absolved you from your guilt and have given you special blessings. Go forth and read, my child.
