tumblr: stop liking—
no because I am a responsible functioning adult with a healthy disassociation between fiction and reality
#yES #i love you tumblr but fuck me there is a big difference between constructive discourse and censorship #can you imagine a uni english class #where the discussion stopped with #‘hamlet was problematic and therefore it is imperative that we never speak his name ever again #if you find him compelling you’re bad people lol’#instead 'hamlet is a problematic bag of dicks #now lET’S CRACK THAT DOUCHE-EGG OPEN AND FIND OUT WHAT HIS DEAL IS’#tumblr #and like i should add: if you can’t disassociate between the fiction and reality that is perfectly okay #no one is forcing you to like anything here or even be okay with it #this is not a scenario where one type of person is right and the other is wrong though #it’s just that honestly we are all special fucking snowflakes you know? we’re all different #and you can’t demand that everyone process things like you #if you don’t like something for the love of god just avoid it #in fandom especially the aim is to enjoy yourself #don’t insist on torturing yourself by throwing yourself neck deep into your triggers #and demand that everyone conform to your needs #tag ranting #god i’m sorry why do i do this to these poor tags (tags courtesy of fireflyca)
I was thinking about this the other day and realized that there is a better way to think about it than “I will literally be in debt for the rest of my life,” and that is “I live in a society in which I must pay a lifelong tax so that I can do the work that I love.”
Because that’s what it is. Every month I will pay this affordable but not insignificant cost because the alternative would’ve been to do something I hate or merely tolerate. I could’ve been a mediocre programmer or a mediocre scientist who dreads going to work every day and constantly fears getting fired for their mediocrity, but instead I will become a fantastic therapist. People will seek ME out for my expertise. I will be not only in demand, but also fulfilled and engaged and actually helpful to others in some way.
And yeah, it’s still totally bullshit that we’ve set things up that way–that we’ve decided it’s reasonable to saddle a person with a debt nearly five times their starting salary–but at least this isn’t *my* shame or failure. That’s why I don’t mind posting this at all. Anyone who thinks my debt reflects my worth or even my financial savvy can pretty much fuck off. Anyone who thinks I ought to be miserable or extremely stressed or at least a little ashamed because of this now knows better. What a fantastic way to reframe the absurdity of student loan debt. Well said!
YO.
As of June 2015…
- Rosa’s has given away more than 23,000 slices (a 130% increase in just four months!) and is providing meals free of charge to up to 100 people on any given day.
- The uptick in business means Wartman needs more employees. And true to Rosa’s pay-it-forward spirit, he’s hiring through agencies that connect homeless folks with jobs.
- And they’ve even started selling official Rosa’s apparel, which features designs by homeless artists. Half of all the revenue goes right back to supporting Philly’s homeless community through pay-it-forward pizza. So far, T-shirt sales have funded a full 10% of donated slices.
Wow!
Amazing!

The first plane of Syrian refugees headed for Canada touched down in the country late Thursday, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was on hand to welcome the arrivals. Just a few hundred had landed, but Canada is on track to accept many, many more.

In the midst of the awful rhetoric about refugees these images give me such joy. Welcome to Canada! Great job welcoming them, Calgary! I hope to see more moments like this all across Canada.
It’s not just a warm welcome at the airport:
“After the launch of the Syrian refugee sponsorship project initiated by the Calgary Catholic and Immigration Society three weeks ago, over 500 Calgarians have come forward showing an interest in helping. […]
The society has scheduled a number of private and group sponsorship sessions in Calgary over the next several weeks, providing Calgarians information and the opportunity to sponsor Syrian refugees. […]
A sponsorship, Newman explained, would involve a one-year commitment from a Canadian family and full support with housing, food, help finding employment, accessing health care and registering children in local schools.
Sponsoring an individual would cost approximately $9,000 whether a family chooses to house the refugee themselves or help find and pay for rental accommodation. Sponsoring a family, with two adults and two children for instance, could cost as much as $20,000.“
